Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon, is an icon of the 20th century.  Becoming an astronaut in 1962, he was involved in various space program firsts, including commanding the Gemini 8 flight in 1966 when he performed the first successful docking of two vehicles in space.  Later, as the commander of Apollo 11, he with colleagues Mike Collins and Buzz Aldrin, completed the first landing mission to the moon.  For his achievement he received the Medal of Freedom, the highest award a US civilian can achieve.

In detail
Learning to fly as a teenager, Neil has been involved in flight all his life.  He is a Korean War veteran, having flown 78 combat missions while in the United States Navy.  He then spent 17 years with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as an engineer, test pilot, astronaut and administrator. As a test pilot at NASA's Flight Research Centre at Edwards, California, Neil was a project pilot on many pioneering high speed aircraft, including the well known X-15 which flew to 6400 kilometres per hour and over 60 kilometres altitude.
